In the recent times, New Jersey has been awarded the unfortunate distinction of being the only state in the nation that distributes the purest form of the harmful drug heroin in the streets. The state is surrounded by several large ports. Besides, there is also a major airport in the state. Government agencies think that these ports serve as easy entry points of these drugs into the state. And since the drugs are smuggled in from South America, these ports within the state serve as direct access points. According to Raquel Jeffers, the director of the state’s addiction services, about 40% of the addicts in the rehabilitation homes of New Jersey have revealed that heroin has been their main addictive drug in the past couple of years.

In the year 2008, the DEA had reported the popularity of heroin was the most amongst the young adults of New Jersey who aged between 18 to 25 years. They had also added that these youth population of New Jersey used heroin double the times that was used by the national population. In 2007, the Federal agents had successfully seized 300 pounds of the drug in New Jersey. One of the spokesmen for the federal DEA had revealed to the New York Times that the purity levels of heroin in New Jersey have scaled up to as high as 72%. This illicit distribution of heroin and its abuse has posed a very serious threat to the state of New Jersey and the city that remains the most vulnerable to this in the state is Newark.

In the year 2003, a man near his sixties had died of heroin overdose in Ocean County. According to the reports, he had been supplied the drug by a friend who was held in the State Supreme Court for questioning and then slapped with several charges. In the same year, the grand jury of Ocean County had indicted to people for overdosing a man to death with heroin in 2002. Again, in the same 2003, in Roselle a heroin extraction lab was discovered. The lab was capable of processing some 10 kg of heroin. The health consequences that are associated with the abuse of heroin have been found to be much worse than any other that is popularly used in the state. The number of treatment admissions related to heroin addiction has significantly increased and it has also been found out that addicts in New Jersey are resorting more to Heroin than any other drug or even alcohol for that matter.
